Bigbury On Sea is in the perfect place from which to explore South Devon and is within easy reach of many pretty towns. Here is a sample with a few ideas of what there is to do.
A traditional market town set on the estuary, with a selection of independent retailers, antique shops and art galleries. Cafes, pubs and restaurants serving the best local produce, including craft ales and locally produced gin and wine. Many local events take place including the Kingsbridge Food and Music Festival in June, Kingsbridge Fair Week in July, Kingsbridge Show in September and Kingsbridge Celebrates Christmas in December.
One of the prettiest and most popular coastal towns in Devon, sitting on the banks of the Kingsbridge Estuary. It has outstanding coastal views and rolling countryside as well as being a haven for water sports enthusiasts. Many boutique shops, and independent retailers, art galleries and gift shops. Restaurants and bars serve locally caught fresh seafood and locally farmed produce. Try some Salcombe Dairy Ice-cream or the award winning Salcombe Gin. Visit the National Trust's Overbeck's Museum and Garden or hire a boat from Whitestrand Boat Hire.
Beautiful bustling town set on the banks of the picturesque River Dart, with stunning estuary views, plenty of open spaces in the centre of town - Coronation Park and Royal Avenue Gardens. There is the famous Butterwalk, a terrace of rich merchant's houses built between 1635-1640, which is an outstanding example of a Tudor building and now houses the Dartmouth Museum. Lots of independent stores, many art galleries and a huge variety of cafes, restaurants and pubs. River cruises along the River Dart from the Embankment. Annual festivals include the Dart Music Festival in Spring, Dartmouth Shakespeare week and the Royal Regatta in August and the Dartmouth Food Festival held in the Autumn. Visit Woodlands Family Theme Park or the Britannia Naval College, or perhaps National Trust's Greenway, the former home of much-loved author Agatha Christy, who has links to Burgh Island.
A pretty historic market town with a fascinating history on the banks of the River Dart well known for being alternative, artistic and eco friendly. Visit Totnes Castle or the award winning Sharpham Vineyard or on a rainy day a visit to China Blue Pottery Painting is a must.
Designated a national park in 1951, Dartmoor is a vast area of huge richness stretching 368 square miles. The landscape is populated by granite tors, mysterious hut circles, standing stones, ancient woodlands, Dartmoor ponies, rushing streams and secluded villages. Young children will love Pennywell Farm and all the family will appreciate Becky Falls Ancient Woodland Park.
